Home > Capabilities > Metal Injection Molding

Metal injection molding(MIM), a new method of metal processing: combining organic binder and metal powder, using the traditional method same as plastic injection to form the parts. MIM is able to produce parts with complex shapes, superior strength and excellent surface finish with high volume manufacturing.

Advantages of Metal Injection Molding

• Manufacture complicated shapes
• Manufacture of micro-sized parts in high volumes
• Excellent mechanical properties
• Efficient use of material

Metal Injection Molding Process

Compounding Feedstock
Your desired blend of metal powders is combined with binders to create a “feedstock” mix.

Molding
The feedstock is heated and injected into a mold cavity under high pressure, where it takes on the shape of the desired part.
 Debinding
The molded part is then removed from the mold and subjected to a debinding process. where a portion of the binder material is removed.

 Sintering
Sintering eliminates the remaining binder and gives the part its final geometry and strength.

Secondary
Finally, the part may undergo any additional finishing processes needed such as surface treatment, heat treatment or machining to achieve the desired finish and dimensional accuracy.

Available materials for Metal Injection Molding

At Work Precision, we specialize in stainless steel and low alloy steel materials for MIM. We also can manufacture your precision component using many other materials.
 STAINLESS STEEL
The metal injection molding (MIM) process achieves high densities, enhancing the strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance of stainless steels. These materials are manufactured from pre-alloyed or elementally blended stainless steels, and include austenitic, ferritic, and precipitation hardening grades.
 LOW ALLOY STEEL
Low alloy steels are generally used for structural applications. They are ideal for applications that call for hardness and strength.

Finishing Options for MIM

PictureDescriptionTexture
Painting
The process is sprayed with liquid paint. The appearance looks more beautiful after spraying various colors. At the same time, the life and service life of the product can be extended due to an extra layer of protection.Smooth, Glossy, Matte
Powder coating
Powder coating is a strong, wear-resistant finish that is compatible with all metal materials.Glossy or Semi-glossy
Black Oxide
Applicable on steels, black oxide is a conversion coating used to improve corrosion resistance and minimize light reflection.Smooth
Passivation

Passivation is a widely-used metal finishing process to prevent corrosion.  The chemical treatment leads to a protective oxide layer, or passivation film, that is less likely to chemically react with air and cause corrosion.
Matte
Electroplate
Electroplating can be functional, decorative or corrosion-related. Many industries use the process, in which chrome-plating of steel automobile parts is common. Smooth, Glossy finish
